A new player in the portable gaming industry will knock the socks off any gaming fan with a 3D gamer powered by a 1.2GHz Via C7-M processor. Digital Cube will also put in 512MB of RAM, Windows XP and 30GB of hard drive. It’s not entirely certain the 4.3-inch screen will be 3D but a new photo surfacing at least shows a 3D camera as possible accessory (after the break).

It’s 12 % thinner than DS Lite with 17% bigger displays. The DSi is not exactly DS 2 but equipped with 2 cameras and the inventiveness the Japanese are known for, there’s plenty of possibility for practical use as well as entertainment. It’s either Nintendo will release DS Lites in new colors or they have something bigger upcoming in the DS line next year. Rumors of a widescreen Nintendo DS 2 have been circulating for sometime and I kinda expect an announcement this year. This new rumor pegs the “refresh” to include not only the top screen but also a widening of the bottom screen as well. Besides the bigger screens, both panels will have touch control. This doesn’t mean old titles will not be supported, however:

The new display functionality and shape could either support old titles or require all new ones exclusively. On the one hand, existing DS titles could be stretched and simply deactivate the top touch display. On the other, the new hardware presents a new control and display dynamic that would seem worthy of an entire new stock of titles.

The GP2X WIZ portable system is now available at Dynamism for $179.99. Gamepark made the Wiz a lot more compact than the previous GP2X. The new GP2X Wiz is the usual emulator portable gamer with NES, SNES and Genesis support and playing MPEG4, XVID, DIVX and MP3, OGG, WAV as well. The WIZ features a 2.8-inch QVGA OLED screen an ARM9 533 MHz processor with 64MB of RAM. It’s very handy to have with a calculator, planner, alarm, world Time, memo pad, and voice recorder. Dynamism will ship the Gamepark GP2X Wiz with 12 embedded games.

Everyone probably knows by now the potential of the iPhone/iPod Touch to become a very formidable gaming device, but one thing that’s holding it back from reaching new heights is the lack of dedicated gaming controls. Well, this where the iControlPad will come in handy. It seeks to address that specific problem by coming up with a case that’s equipped with a d-pad and four standard buttons mimicking a typical game console configuration. While there already a handful of emulator apps supporting this new gizmo in the jailbroken world, it is yet to be recognized and adapted by apps available in the App Store.

Despite its primitive appearance, it does look like a promising innovation which can be used to tap a whole new segment of the market the iPhone/iPod Touch has yet to reach. Unfortunately, while I do wish that legal apps will support this in the future, something tells me that the big honchos in Apple don’t share the same sentiment.

Sony has announced PSP-3000. The new Playstation Portable is the exact likeness of the old but with a better screen and built-in mic. Further details have yet to be announced. Pricing of the PSP-3000 is expected to be around 199 euros or $291.

Social networking is something Nintendo should really consider when they do release the DS 2. For now putting Twitter on DS will give you a headache not least of which is the Spanish language instruction. The application is written by Jorge S. DSTwitter is now on its 1.2 version and hopefully future versions are going to support English but Twitter is officially on DS and though it takes more tweaking than you’d expect and few Hail Mary’s it comes free and should have you Twittering on the go before the purple sky shows the first hints of day break.

It’s the right time for Nintendo to begin hyping their DS 2. Still unannounced, the DS 2, according to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, makes sense for Nintendo while the Sony PSP’s number one console status is still fresh. Pachter said that DS sales in Japan will continue declining and thinks that “We think that Nintendo has a new handheld device ready for launch in [Japan] before the end of the calendar year.” Well, it’s not as if Nintendo cannot pull a DS successor out of thin air if it thinks its needed.
