CNET thinks the player is important enough for a full review and they have it on site. The Slacker G2 is a video-less player but the Slacker online music support is just excellent. Yep, everybody is saying as far as WiFi-connected music service is concerned. So, is it worth your money? Is it good enough carrying around along with your cellphone and PMP?

The Slacker G2 has a review from Gadling. Why not CNET, you ask? The 2.5-inch QVGA screen will not be playing a lot of videos but the ability to customize your online radio station may be worth the unannounced asking price of the unit and the $10/ month or $90/ a year Slacker Radio subsciption. There will be major competition from Apple’s new iTunes Genius and Zune Pass. The Slacker G2 comes in 4Gb and 8GB versions. Think of it as a better, more portable Slacker.

The new Archos portable media player and Internet device has just been thoroughly reviewed at Archoslounge. Though the software is still in beta, Archos somehow thought it fit to make the device available so be warned. Besides the nice form factor and the incredible big screen, the improved processor is really something users will enjoy.

Archos’ new dependency on the touch screen is very important in the new Archos 5 and 7. Archos PMPs up to the Gen5 utilizes tactile buttons in support of the touchscreen interface. With the introduction of both Archos 5 and Archos 7, Archos is hard pressed to put out a fairly sophisticated touchscreen UI, hence the decision probably of releasing the product while software is still in beta. The chrome casing is beautiful but it does produce glare and is a magnet for fingerprints.

All in all, the Archos 5 is a big improvement on the 605 WiFi. It’s better in almost everything with nifty add ons tempting Archos fans to upgrade as quickly as possible, not to mention the much improved looks. Read on for a video comparison on the matter. Or read the entire review here.
Although Pasen was responsible for getting this site in hot waters due to its illicit use of an artists intellectual property (see the comments section of this post), but the company did manage to come out with a cheap but workable portable media player. The video playback can run only through conversion. The resulting format is pretty decent and the conversion software handles a lot of codecs. Design and user experience is not as polished as players from better known manufacturers. Generation MP3 concludes:

A 3-inch touch screen player in a pretty sleek form factor will always get me interested. The Chuwi T8 offers a little more than your regular touchscreen PMP: it’s called “dual cover” technology. I am not sure if the video reviewer is touching his Chuwi correctly or maybe it’s an early firmware issue, but the swiping feature seems as slippery as… well… It uses a Rockchip RK2706 and also features voice recording. Priced at $119, it offers a likable UI, great media support and 5 hours of video. Specs below.

Chuwi T8 Specs:

3-inch 400 x 240 touch screen
RM, RMVB, AVI, DIVX, XVID, FLV , ASF, MP4
MP3, WMA, WMA/VBR, APE, FLAC , AAC , OGG
Jpeg, Bmp , Gif, multi-line text
Voice recording, FM radio, FM recording

The PMP than every bargain hunter has been swooning over has finally been videoed. The Teclast M26 is as sleek as we hoped it would be though the firmware isn’t quite ready yet. The 2.6-inch resistive touch screen isn’t as sensitive as more expensive players with capacitive touch screen, but the Wolfson chip gives music listening a really classy boost, in par with iPods and Samsungs. It’s a cheap player from Teclast and they really went out of their way to cut cost, including opting out of putting in a pricier capacitive touch screen. Mp4 Nation thinks it can sell the 8GB version for less than $100. Quite the bargain.

The Teclast M26 supports PlayFX, album art, ID3, audio resume, multi-functions includes e-Book, audio recordings, TTS.

Nothingbutcreative, a cool new site we’ve heard about just now has a review of the newly announced Zen X-Fi. They have a test unit and they took their time unboxing the PMP and taking very, very good impressionistic photos of the X-Fi player from Creative and a video, which we embedded below this post. We are happy to note that X-Fi can be turned on and off…

The side-by-side photo with the Zen V Plus is also something not to be missed.

Their test unit is the 32GB version with the WiFi so the full review, which should be coming a few days from now should be interesting. I can’t wait till someone tries out the instant messaging function. Video below.

For 30 euros more than the original Eee PC 701, you can get a better, prettier machine with a more comfortable keyboard, better support for memory extension and the Aspire One is using a superior Intel Atom processor.

Is MID the future of portable media players?

I went over to the our friends site at Dap Review, which I rarely do nowadays unfortunately, and found an interesting discussion about the state of the PMP/MP3 market. The biggest players are not releasing new models often enough and manufacturers from China still have not resolved their firmware issues. The most interesting post, in my opinion, was from vlada who volunteered that the not-so-humble MID (mobile Internet device) that BenQ, Lenovo and Aigo has been working on will take PMPs to the next level. The prices of these MIDs right now are nothing to scoff at. These are as far from Chinese MP4 players as you can go. The first of these MID to become operational and ready for shipment, the Aigo one, has been thoroughly reviewed at UMPC Fever. We want you to direct you, dear readers, to that review post and see for yourselves. It’s a 4.8-inch-screen, a Intel Atom Z500 running the engine, Midnux GUI, touchscreen and slide-out QWERTY, the full complement of HSDPA, WiFi and GPS. It’s really a media-centric computer. The unoxing video after the break.

Note: we still think the future of the PMP market looks something like this.
