Engadget reports that the iPhone 2.0.2 firmware update is out. What this update does no one knows yet but I bet a lot of people are hoping this iPhone 2.0.2 resolves the connection problems that have been reported. If you already have a jailbreak installed on your iPhone 2.0 or iPhone 2.0.1 software it might be best to wait a few days or so. Some users have indeed reported better connection after updating to iPhone 2.0.2 so a good one from Apple and very prompt.

Current software jailbreaks of iPhone 2.0 are living up to their authors’ promises: Apple will not be able to brick them. The 2.1 firmware update, which is coming at an unannounced time but probably very soon, will introduce better turn-by-turn instructions on the iPhone 3G’s GPS function. It can track direction and speed while you’re traveling, which is pretty awesome. Along with the 2.1 firmware is a new version of the SDK.

The iPhone Dev Team missed to make their jailbreak software compatible with Windows so someone had to do it for them. The Pwnage tool is quite circuitous and I myself would rather pay $20 for a non-free software. The jailbreak and unlock first-gen iPhone running iPhone 2.0 software at this link with the steps. As usual, do the jailbreaking and unlocking at your own risk.

Now you can jailbreak your iPhone 2.0 for free (if you own a Mac!) with iPhone Dev Team’s PwnageTool 2.0. It jailbreaks and unlock and jailbreak iPhone, jailbreak iPhone 3G and the iPod Touch if they are running the iPhone 2.0 software. Only the 2.0 software is supported by this jailbreak. THIS IS NOT AN UNLOCK SOFTWARE FOR iPHONE 3G… yet.

Update 1: Just to clear up some confusion over what this actually does: yes, it jailbreaks and unlocks older iPhones, and jailbreaks iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touches. We only support the 2.0 firmwares.

Update 2: It looks like there aren’t enough TCP ports on that server, so _BigBoss_ has generously offered to mirror it.

Update 3: If you get Error 1600 from iTunes (or if you see in your log a failure to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw), try: mkdir “~/Library/iTunes/Device Support” ; if that directory already exists, remove any files in it. Then re-run PwnageTool.

The iPhone Dev Team may finally release their iPhone 2.0 jailbreak tomorrow. As they have explained before, the tool would jailbreak iPhone 2.0 for non-App Store third-party software and unlock the iPhone 3G for any carrier. Dev Team seemed to find it difficult to do both - jailbreak and unlock - as they have already explained.

The first-gen iPhone was unlocked for the first time by Turbo SIM. It’s not a software jailbreak but it’s a simple method for those users willing to shell out $80 for a blank SIM. It took the unlockers four days after the iPhone was released, doing exactly what was done on the original iPhone, using a SIM adapter to fool the new iPhone. I wonder why this wasn’t done any sooner, because with over a million iPhone 3Gs in users hands now, the majority of whom may not think getting tied to one network, esepecially when traveling and having to pay roaming fees, is not such a good idea.

Our procedure consist in using one SIM adapter to simulate a fake IMSI test card. Instead of the AT&T IMSI like in the universals.

The unlock method is not posted online yet, and honestly we are not sure it will become available for free.

Geohot, the first iPhone jailbraker, will release his iPhone 2.0 jailbreak soon - that is, if iPhone Dev Team, with an apology to Zibri. Apparently, iPhone Dev has come into some difficulty in getting PwnageTool 2.0 ready for a public release.

In giving his warning to the Team, geohot explains the difference between iPhone unlock and iPhone jailbreak:

The possiblity of unlocking, which is very distinct from jailbreaking, is based entirely on the baseband bootloader. Apple doesn’t appear to upgrade the bootloader on phones in the field, probably for fear of breaks. So any old iPhones out there today, regardless of version, can be unlocked.

The iPhone 3G uses a different bootloader, which I believe there aren’t any known exploits in yet. So no unlock.

George Hotz goes on to elaborate and specify why he thinks iPhone Dev should have the pwnage tool ready by now:

There is a known exploit in iBoot, on both the old and 3G iPhones. The “the specific date/time is not firm yet” pwnage tool will leverage it to jailbreak all 2.0 software iPhones, 3G and otherwise. Dev team, that date better be soon or I might just have to release yiPhone. The iBoot exploit is yours, use it. You wouldn’t want a repeat of ZiPhone now…

The last sentence is very interesting indeed.
